St. Vincent – Surgeon
Live 4AD session from October 2011.
This live session from around the time of Strange Mercy – St. Vincent’s major breakthrough album – is a perfect demonstration of Annie Clark’s talent.
St. Vincent’s albums are full of some wonderfully eclectic and interestingly arranged songs, which I strongly recommend listening to. However, it’s in their live performance that the reasons they are so special become even more obvious. Being able to enjoy Annie’s physical, dancer-like presence, in combination with her effortless, technical guitar playing ability, is a real joy.
Though St. Vincent’s first album relies on more conventional approaches to composition, each album steps up Annie’s experimentation with new, braver ways of using her guitar and voice. In my mind, Strange Mercy is the point at which their music became a really magical concoction.
